Elmhurst Dairy employs 240 people at our plant in Jamaica, Queens, most of whom live in the local neighborhood. Over 180 of our employees are proud members of IBT Local 584. The diversity of our work force reflects that of the greater Queens community, and we feel fortunate to be able to provide so many good jobs to our fellow New Yorkers.

Al grew up in the era when milk was delivered by horse and wagon and has worked at Elmhurst Dairy for 42 years. At 94 years old, he still comes in every Monday and Friday to make sure everyone in the plant is following maintenance protocol. He grew up in Massachusetts and Tennessee where his father was in the milk business, but came to New York City with his family in the 5th grade and graduated in 1939 from Cornell University with a degree in Dairy Science. Al was in the service with the 8th Air Force from 1940 to 1946 and spent two years overseas in England. He lives in Amityville, L.I. and likes to spend his free time taking out the sailboat he and his wife built together and doing a little bit of metal and woodwork.
